President of AS Roma Jim Pallotta has defended his club’s decision to sell Mohamed Salah to Liverpool last summer, stating that they had “no choice”.
The Egyptian has torn up the Premier League in his debut season for the Reds, outscoring both Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez with 36 goals in all competitions so far.
Liverpool purchased him for £36 million – a relative bargain – and critics sbothai have taken to describe Roma as a “supermarket” in view of their track record of selling star players season after season.
The Serie A side also let Miralem Pjanic leave for Juventus in 2016, where he has become an integral squad player – though the club president insists they were forced to sell both players and that there are more to transfers than what people are shown.
“Things aren’t as simple as a player goes or we transfer him. Let me give you an example. There’s a frustration on my part that people say Roma are a supermarket,” Pallotta told Sirius XM radio (via FI).
“When you think about it, Pjanic had a release clause and he had to go. Salah is tearing up the Premier League, he said he wanted to leave and had no time left on his contract, so we had no choice.
“There are things that go on behind the scenes that people don’t realise, as either players want to leave or there are things we have to do. We’re not just trying to sell players.”
